Zeiss Terra ED 10x42 ReviewIf you have never heard of Zeiss Terra ED 10X42 binoculars then you are in the right place.

I am an avid birdwatcher and as you can imagine, I have tested and tried different brands of binoculars.

When a friend recommended the Zeiss Terra ED 10X42 binoculars, I decided to give them a try.

And since then, I have not bought another pair of binoculars. Here is what I like about these binoculars.

Features and Benefits

Glass Coating and Compact Housing

One of the things I love about the Zeiss Terra 10X42 binoculars is its compact frame. The binoculars have fiberglass-reinforced casing that is strong and durable. The rubber casing makes the binoculars water and fog proof.

Another great feature is the lenses. The lenses use ED (extra-low dispersion) glass, which is heavier and more expensive than HD (high-density) glass.

This glass is made by the Schott glass company. One of the few companies in the world that makes this type of glass.

[wpsm_box type=”info” float=”none” text_align=”left”]
What’s so special about this glass is that contains some metal elements that help produce sharp images. When light enters the lens glass it is dispersed prismatically. In other words, when the light hits the glass at an angle, it splits into many different colors.
[/wpsm_box]

These colors have different wavelengths, which bend at separate angles from each other as they travel through the glass. The ED glass with the help of the metal elements keeps the light wavelengths more closely together.

This reduces chromatic aberration commonly known color fringing. This a problem that occurs when lenses do a bad job at refracting the colors causing images to appear blurry.

Zeiss Terra ED 10x42 has the ED glass

With the ED glass, the images appear sharper and clearer because of its ability to lower color fringing. This also helps prevent eye fatigue. Additionally, the Zeiss Terra binoculars are multi-coated to help prevent color muddying.

Sharp Images

One of the key reasons why I use the Zeiss Terra 10X42 is because even in low light conditions, I can still see images very clearly.

I don’t struggle to determine what I’m looking at because Zeiss uses cutting edge technology to ensure that images don’t appear blurry despite the light conditions.

This is great especially for people like me who use their binoculars for viewing wildlife at night when they are super active.

Ergonomics

One of the main features I look for before buying a pair of binoculars is its ergonomics.

The Terra ED 10X42 binoculars feature a comfy focus system with a large, easy to reach focus wheel that enables quick and easy focusing. The eyecups are adjustable and are well aligned to assist in viewing comfort.

Zeiss Terra ED 10x42 has a compact and sturdy construction

The binoculars have a compact and sturdy construction that is lightweight, fog proof, and waterproof. So even in harsh conditions, these binoculars are designed for performance and durability.

Close-Up Field Observation

The Terra ED 10X42 has a wide field of view. This means that if you want to view a bird or any other wildlife that is located at a long distance, you won’t struggle to search for it.

This is because what you want to view comes in the field view instantly. This makes viewing wildlife more enjoyable.

[wpsm_box type=”info” float=”none” text_align=”left”]
But it is important to know that binoculars with a high magnification has a narrower field of view than one that has a low magnification. It’s for this reason that many birdwatchers, like myself, prefer binoculars with 8X to one that has 10X magnification.
[/wpsm_box]

So when choosing a pair of binoculars, ask yourself whether if magnification is of priority or the field of view. This however also depends on what you want to use the binoculars for.

The Upland Optics Perception 10X42 binoculars are marketed as hunting binoculars. But they can be used for other activities like whale watching and stargazing.

The difference between Upland Optics binoculars and the Zeiss Terra ED 10X42 is the lens coatings and the price tag. The Terra lenses are multi-coated while the Uplands Optics are fully multi-coated.

This means that the Upland Optics is slightly optically better. And the Terra Ed binoculars are almost twice the price of the Uplands Optics.

The Nikon 7577 MONARCH 5 10×42 uses Nikon’s extra-low dispersion glass for their lenses for clearer and sharper images. When you compare them to the Terra ED, the difference is marginal.

The only thing that stands out like a sore thumb is the price tag. The Monarch’s cost almost half the price of the Zeiss Terra ED.

Features:

  • Extra low-dispersion lens glass
  • Fully multi-coated lenses
  • Water and fog proof construct
  • Adjustable eye caps
  • They are lightweight

Conclusion

Zeiss has always produced great products and the Terra ED is no different. The ED glass with multi-coatings helps deliver sharp, bright, and clear images.

The fast focusing feature allows for quick and easy focusing. And the eyecups are adjustable for comfortable viewing.

This lightweight and compact binoculars are a combination of strength and performance. The sturdy, compact, and lightweight construction makes it easy to carry around and use in any weather condition.
